WBB RECAP: Gryphons Unable to Overcome Slow Start in Road Loss at Brock in Season Opener

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Gryphons women's basketball team officially got their 2024-25 OUA regular season schedule underway on Thursday night (Oct. 24) with a road game in St. Catharines against the Brock Badgers. The host Badgers were able to get off to a fast start at Bob Davis Gymnasium, with Brock outscoring Guelph 22-12 in the opening quarter. The Gryphons would respond in the 2nd quarter, finding their rhythm offensively and exploding for 26-points in the quarter to make it just a 4-point game at the half. But the Badgers would extend their lead in the second half, with the OUA's reigning Player of the Year, Madalyn Weinert, picking up where she left off a season ago, scoring a game-high 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting. The Gryphons were led by third-year guard, Renee Armstrong, who finsihed the night with a 20-point, 12-rebound double-double. Four of the Gryphons five starters scored in double figures, with Julia Colavecchia (12 points), Hannah Bourdon (12 points) and Alexis Wright (11 points) all chipping in. The Gryphons will now return home for a Saturday afternoon matchup with the Queen's Gaels. A season ago, the Gryphons saw their 2023-24 campaign come to an end with an OUA quarterfinal loss at Queen's, with the Gaels going on to claim OUA silver medals after losing in the Critelli Cup to Carleton. This Saturday's matchup at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre is set for a 1pm tip, with tickets available online at gryphons.ca/tickets.
