TORONTO, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons women's basketball team got 2024 started off on the right foot with a convincing 91-57 road win on Thursday night (Jan. 4, 2024) over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.
The Gryphons dominated on Thursday night at U of T's Goldring Centre, leading by 20-points at the half, and 29-points after 3 quarters of play before leaving Toronto with a 34-point road win.
Julia Colavecchia led the way for the Gryphons with a team-high 20 points, to go along 9 rebounds. A balance attack from the Gryphons included strong performances from
Renee Armstrong (18 pts, 9 reb, 6 ast),
Trinity Papamandjaris (11 pts, 10 reb) and
Keryl Ousey (14 pts off the bench in 18 minutes of floor time). The Gryphons shot 43% from the field (33-77) and were 16-of-21 from the free throw line. Thursday night's game marks the second straight OUA game in which the Gryphons have eclipsed the 90-point plateau, with the team having put up 95 points prior to the holiday break in a 95-45 road win at Ontario Tech.
With the win, the Gryphons improved to 7-4 on the season and temporarily move into top spot in the OUA West division standings. Guelph (7-4, 14 points) leapfrogged the Waterloo Warriors (6-3, 12 points) for 1st-place in the division, with the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (6-4, 12 points) and Windsor Lancers (5-3, 10 points) close behind in the competitive OUA West. The University of Toronto Varsity Blues, meanwhile, saw their record fall to 2-8 on the season with the loss.
The Gryphons (7-4) will return to their home court for each of their next three OUA games, beginning with a Saturday night matchup with the Windsor Lancers (5-3). Tip off on Saturday (Jan. 6) at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre is set for 6pm, with the game broadcast live online at www.oua.tv.
