GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons women's basketball team earned their 11th win of the 2023-24 season Saturday night (Jan. 20), taking down the OUA East-leading TMU Bold 60-36. It was a U of G defensive effort that saw the Gryphons hold the Bold to just 12 points after the opening quarter which led them to a convincing win. With the victory the Gryphons retake the top spot in the OUA West while the Bold fall to 11-4 and tie the Brock Badgers for first in the OUA East.
Offensively, the Gryphons were led by all-star talent
Renee Armstrong who produced a game-high 12-point performance while adding 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and a pair of blocks to her statline. Forward
Trinity Papamandjaris also reached double-digit points, finishing the game with 10 to go along with 4 rebounds. Third-year Niagara Falls native
Julia Colavecchia recorded a fantastic all-round performance with 7 points, 3 rebounds, 6 steals, and 2 blocks.Â
After the Gryphons got off to a slow start to open the game, trailing 24-14 by the end of the first, the U of G team took over at both ends of the court. The Bold would score just 12 points in the remaining three quarters on 3-for-18 shooting and 0-for-9 from beyond the arc. Beyond their shooting woes, the visiting team also had trouble keeping the Gryphons from the charity strip, giving up 17 fouls which included 10 in the third. At the opposite end of the court the Gryphons converted on 8 three-pointers and went 16-18 from the free throw line to take a convincing victory.Â
The Gryphons (11-5) now receive a week off from competition, with their next game coming January 31 in London where they will take on the 9-6 Western Mustangs.Â
