GUELPH, Ont. - Friday night (Jan. 12) at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, the University of Guelph women's basketball team defeated the Lakehead Thunderwolves 79-52, earning their ninth win of 2023-24 season. With the win the Gryphons improve to 9-4 while the Thunderwolves fall to 4-9. The win also gives the Gryphons sole possession of first place in the OUA West division with a single game lead over the second-place Waterloo Warriors.
The Gryphons were led by fifth-year forward
Trinity Papamandjaris who scored a game-high 17 points.
Alexis Wright finished the game with 12 points while
Julia Colavecchia put on another impressive all-round performance with 9 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks, and 4 assists. Despite some strong showing from the trio of Gryphons it was a fantastic team performance on Friday night that featured 11 different scores and 12 student-athletes take the court.
After Allowing a 9-0 Lakehead run to open the game, the Gryphons found themselves trailing by five after the first quarter. The Thunderwolves lead did not last long however, as the Gryphons defence took over, holding Lakehead to just five points in the second to take a 41-27 lead heading into halftime. The third quarter then saw the Gryphons outscore the Thunderwolves 27-11 before a 14 point fourth quarter to solidify the win.
The Gryphons (9-4) will return to their home court tomorrow night (Jan. 13) for a matchup with the Brock Badgers (7-4). Tip off is set for 6pm with tickets available at
