WVB RECAP: The Gryphons End the 2022-23 on a High Note With a Straight-Set Victory Over the RMC Paladins

GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons women's volleyball team concluded their 2022-23 season on Saturday night as they took on the RMC Paladins in their final regular season home game. The Gryphons ended their season on a high note, taking both games against the Paladins in straight sets to finish with back-to-back wins. After a pair of close sets the Gryphons took over in the 3rd, allowing just 13 points to solidify their 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-13) victory. 

The first set saw the Gryphons come out in a similar form to their 3-0 win last night over the Paladins, taking a quick 5-1 lead. Ella Carter vs RMCMidway through the set they would extend their lead to 20-10 before RMC would follow with a 5-0 run. A Guelph timeout would put a halt to any momentum the Paladins gained and the Gryphons would close out the opening set with a 5-1 run to take the first set 25-16. The second set saw a much more tightly-contested match play out, with the Paladins and Gryphons playing to a 17-17 tie. After the stalemate the Gryphons would allow just three RMC points to take the second set 25-20. Looking to wrap up their season with another straight set win, the Gryphons would come out firing in the third. The Gryphons built their largest lead on the night, 10-points at the 18-8 mark and wouldn't look back, going on to take the set and the match with a 25-13 win. 

On a night when she was honoured as one of thr three graduating seniors, Jaymie Stephenson led the Gryphon offense in their dominant win. The 5th-year physics major led the Gryphons with 8 kills and 9 points in one of her best performances of the season. Another senior who impressed in the win was Ella Carter. The veteran setter and Hamilton native once again led the Gryphons in kill assists, helping out on 30 of the Gryphs 39 kills in the match. Carter also scored 4 kills on 6 attacks and recorded 3 service aces. Finally, the third graduating senior for the U of G women's volleyball team, Ella Mackenzie, also finished her Gryphon career with a strong performance. The 4th-year human kinetics major from Edmonton recorded 7 kills on 9 attacks and 8 total points. 

The Gryphons finish the 2022-23 OUA volleyball season with a 6-13 record and in 11th in the conference standings. The U of G women closed out the campaign with a four-game win streak comprised of back-to-back wins against the RMC Paladins and Lakehead Thunderwolves for their longest win streak of the season.
