GUELPH, Ont. – Gryphons third-year forward,
Tori Verbeek, scored the game-winning goal midway through the 3rd period on Wednesday night (Nov. 15) at the Gryphon Centre, lifting the University of Guelph women's hockey team to a 2-1 win over the Waterloo Warriors. With the result, the No. 4-nationally ranked Gryphons improve to 8-1-1 on the season and extend their win streak to five in a row while remaining atop the OUA West Division standings, while the Warriors fall to 5-3-1 on the season. Four days after edging Waterloo 1-0 in a shootout back on Saturday (Nov. 11) at Columbia Icefield Arena, the home-and-home series shifted to Guelph, where the Gryphons were able to jump out to a 1st period lead thanks to second-year forward,
Maeve Sutherland-Case, who scored her first of the season to give Guelph a 1-0 lead heading to the 2nd period. After the Warriors were able to tie the game up at 1-1 on a goal from Leah Herrfort, the Gryphons would come up with the game-winner at the 9:08 mark of the 3rd period when
Tori Verbeek showed off some great hands to get around a Waterloo defender before firing home her 4th goal of the season.
Gryphons third-year goalie,
Martina Fedel, who earlier in the day was named the U SPORTS Women's Hockey Athlete of the Week, continued her stellar 2023-24 campaign, turning away 28 of the 29 Waterloo shots sent her way for her 7th win of the season to go along with her OUA-leading 0.75 goals against average on the season.
Up next for the Gryphons, another home game against a Waterloo-based opponent, this time in the form of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, who are off to a strong start to the 2023-24 season with a 7-3-0 record through their first 10 league games, sitting in 2nd-place in the OUA West, four points back of Guelph. The Gryphons and Golden Hawks will meet up on Friday night (Nov. 17) at the Gryphon Centre Arena, with puck drop set for 7:30pm.
