GUELPH, Ont. - Friday night (Sept. 30) at the Gryphon Soccer Complex, the Gryphons women's soccer team fell 2-1 to the OUA West-leading Western Mustangs. The host Gryphons got off to a great start, with second-year forward
Olivia Brown opening the scoring in the 18th minute of play. Brown, a human kinetics major from Guelph, finished off a cross from teammate
Christina Gomes. For Brown, it marked the fourth game in a row in which the Guelph native found the back of the net, and the 6th goal of the 2022 season (tying her for 3rd among OUA goal scoring leaders). Unfortunately for the Gryphons, the 1-0 lead would not last long, with the Mustangs equalizing in the 21st minute on a goal from Hannah Vickers. The match would remain tied into the 2nd half, when Western would take the lead on a 62nd minute goal from Gabby Kohut, which would prove to be the match-winner.
With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 5-2-1 (wins-losses-draws) on the season, and remain in 2nd place in the OUA West Division standings, 6 points back of Western. The Mustangs meanwhile, improve to 7-1-1 on the year. The Gryphons return to action on Sunday afternoon in Waterloo when they face the Warriors at 2pm.
