GUELPH, Ont. – Saturday afternoon at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, the Gryphons women's basketball team cruised to an 83-41 victory over the visiting Algoma Thunderbirds. On an afternoon where the Gryphons were honouring their graduating seniors, the seniors produced some of their best performances of the season, highlighted by fourth-year guard
Burke Bechard pouring in a season-high 24 points. Bechard, a psychology major from Dover Centre, Ontario, set the tone for the Gryphons, who for a second straight day, jumped out to a huge, 1st-quarter lead versus the visitors from Sault Ste Marie. The Gryphons led 27-8 after the opening quarter of play, which marked a second straight hot start to the game following their performance on Friday night versus Algoma where the Gryphons led 28-6 after the opening quarter.
Bechard's standout performance on Saturday afternoon was her latest in what has been yet another impressive season. The OUA All-Star guard is averaging 16.0 points per game during the 2021-22 season, ranking her 6th in the OUA in scoring. Another graduating Gryphon who impressed on Saturday afternoon was senior forward
Reece Mungar. The 6'1" native of Stoney Creek racked up 17 points, and showed off her shooting range, with the forward going 3-4 from beyond the arc. With Saturday afternoon's win, the Gryphons extend their overall win streak to four in a row and improve to 7-3 on the season, good for 3rd in the OUA West Division. The Gryphons now have four games remaining in their 2021-22 OUA regular season schedule, and will return to action on Wednesday night (March 2) when they host the Laurier Golden Hawks.
