MHKY RECAP: The Gryphons Battle Back but Fall Just Short Losing to the Brock Badgers 5-4 in Overtime

GUELPH, Ont. – On Friday night (Dec. 2) the Guelph Gryphons men's hockey lost a hard-fought agonizingly close game to the Brock Badgers in overtime at the Gryphon Centre. After finding themselves down early the Gryphons battled back in the second period before trading scores in the third to force overtime where they would ultimately fall 5-4.
 
The first period of Friday's game opened with a couple of quick scores from the visiting Badgers would jump out to a two-goal lead within the first seven minutes. The first goal came at 3:15 in the first, just seconds after the Gryphons had killed off an early penalty. 0The second Badger goal was scored just 3:20 later and gave the appearance that this came could get out of hand for the Gryphons quickly. After killing off two more Badger power plays I the first the Gryphs would gain some momentum and see some quality scoring chances before the first intermission.
 
Coming out onto the ice for the second period the Gryphons looked determined to get back into the game. During offsetting penalties Giordano Biondi would fire a shot wide of the net only for Nolan DeGurse to find it off the boards and beat the Badger goaltender sliding across the crease to make it a 2-1 game. Just under 4 minutes later, on a Gryphon power play Luke Kutkevicius would find a bouncing puck among Badger defenders to tie the game at 2 apiece.
 
The third period would see the Gryphons take their first lead of the game and score their second power play goal after Liam Ham would blast a shot from the point that would find the back of the net. Just a few seconds following the goal a Gryphon penalty would lead to an opportunity for the Badgers to tie this game once again. With just 23 seconds remaining of the power play the Badgers would score their third of the game to make it 3-3. With under 4 minutes remaining the Badgers would regain the lead to put pressure of the Gryphs with time running out. 3:33 later Nolan DeGurse would net his second of the game to send the game to overtime.
 
In overtime it would be Gryphon goaltender Brendan Cregan would shine, coming up with game-saving save after game-saving save to keep the Gryphons in the game. Cregan would stop 34 of 39 shots on the night for one of his best performances of the season. Unfortunately, after a suspected penalty that was not called the Badgers would breakout for a 2-on-1 and capitalize, taking the win 5-4.
 
The Gryphons (4-4-5) will look to bounce back on Saturday (Dec. 3) when they head to Waterloo to take on the Waterloo Warriors at CIF Arena. Puck drop is set for 7pm and can be seen live, online at www.oua.tv.
