WVB RECAP: Gryphons Defeat the Nipissing Lakers 3-1 for First Win of the 2022-23 Season

GUELPH, Ont. – Saturday night (Nov. 5) at the University of Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre the Gryphons women's rugby team took on the Nipissing Lakers for the second time in as many days. After falling to the Lakers in a five-set thriller on Friday night, the Gryphons responded by defeating the Lakers in 4 sets to split the back-to-back games at one apiece. The Gryphons took the opening two sets 25-23 and 25-15 before dropping the third 25-21, they would then take the final set by a score of 25-23.Samantha Ingleton vs Nipissing 2022

In their second 2022-23 regular season game the Gryphons received several exceptional performances from across the roster. Led by 5th-year right side hitter Jaymie Stephenson who recorded a team-high 12 kills and 15 points while adding 3 blocks on the defensive end. Alongside Stephenson was Gryphon standout Sophie Fernback who recorded 12 points and 9 kills. Also recording 9 kills was rookie and Kitchener native Maia Dan. Dan has had an excellent start to her Gryphon career and played a significant role in Saturday's win, tallying 10 points for the Gryphs. The outside hitter closed out the second set for the Gryphons with a huge kill of an Ella Carter assist. Carter was once again an anchor for the Gryphons. After recording 31 kill assists on Friday the third-year setter added 30 more to her 2022-23 season. After dropping the third set to the Lakers the Gryphons would control much of the fourth, building a 15-6 lead. Nipissing would find their way back into the set but fell short of a comeback with the Gryphs closing out the set and the game with a 25-23 win.

The Gryphons (1-1) will look to take their second win on Friday (Nov. 11) when the Brock Badgers visit Guelph. The match is set for 6pm at the Gryphon Athletic Centre and can be seen live online at www.oua.tv.
