MHKY RECAP: Lancers Pull Off Late Comeback, Beat Gryphons in OT

GUELPH, Ont. – Saturday night (Nov. 5) at the Gryphon Centre Arena, the Gryphons men's hockey team suffered 5-4 overtime loss to the OUA West Division-leading Windsor Lancers. The Gryphons, who were hosting the Lancers for a second consecutive night after dropping a 4-2 game on Friday night, were in control early on, scoring four goals in the opening period. But a late rally from the Lancers would see the visitors erase a 4-1 deficit, with Windsor scoring once in the 2nd period and twice in the 3rd period, to force overtime. Just over a minute into the OT period, Hunter Holmes would score the game-winner for the Lancers, who improve to an OUA West-leading 7-1-1 on the season. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 2-2-2 on the season.

The Gryphons promising start to the night was ignited by a pair of standout rookie forwards. Giordano Biondi and Anthony Tabak, both in their first seasons in the OUA, would score 2:53 and 3:29 into the opening frame to give Guelph an early two-goal lead. After Windsor got one back, Tabak would pick up an assist on a power play goal from Gryphon assistant captain, Zach Poirier, putting Guelph up 3-1. With five minutes remaining in the 1st period, Biondi would score his second goal of the night, and the second of his Gryphon career (regular season play), as the Gryphons took a 4-1 lead to the 2nd period. But the Lancers would not go away. After trimming the deficit to 4-2, they would add two more in the 3rd period, with Anthony Stefano scoring on the power play and Jaydon Fetter tying the game at 4-4 with three and a half minutes remaining in regulation. The OT-winner from Holmes continued Windsor's hot start to the 2022-23 season. The Gryphons (2-2-2) will now hit the road for each of their next three games, beginning with a Friday night (Nov. 11) trip to Waterloo to face the Laurier Golden Hawks. It will then be a quick turnaround for the Gryphs, who head to the University of Toronto on Saturday (Nov. 12) for a matinee matchup with the Varsity Blues (3pm).
