WSCR RECAP: Gryphons Score Twice in Extra Time to Advance Past Lancers in Opening Round of OUA Playoffs

GUELPH, Ont. – Second-year forward Olivia Brown put together a memorable 2022 regular season for the Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team. The 2022 playoffs are off to a memorable start as well. On a cold and rainy Wednesday night (Oct. 28) at the Gryphon Soccer Complex, the Gryphons women's soccer team kept their season alive with a 2-1 victory over the Windsor Lancers in the opening round of the 2022 OUA women's soccer playoffs. U of G sophomore standout, Olivia Brown, scored the first goal of the match, which did not come until the first half of extra time after the two teams battled through 90 minutes of regulation scoreless. Brown, a 19-year-old human kinetics major at the University of Guelph, scored a team-high 9 goals in 12 matches during the regular season for the Gryphons, ranking her 5th in the conference among OUA scoring leaders. On Wednesday night, the Guelph native came through again, helping Guelph take a 1-0 lead over the Lancers in the opening moments of extra time. In the second half of extra time, the Gryphons would extend their lead to 2-0 thanks to another key contributor throughout the 2022 season. Violet Hipkin, a transfer from Trent University currently in her first season as a Gryphon, scored for Guelph in the 110th minute to put the hosts up 2-0. It would prove to be an important goal for the Gryphs, as Windsor was able to score late, with Kailyn Robertson putting the Lancers on the score sheet in the 119th minute. But the final whistle would sound soon after, giving the Gryphons the playoff win and extending their 2022 season for at least one more game. With the win, the Gryphons advance to the 2022 OUA quarterfinals, and will now head to Toronto on Saturday (Oct. 29) for a 1pm matchup with the York Lions.
