WHKY RECAP: Gryphons Fall to the Badgers 2-1 in Overtime

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The Gryphon women's hockey team played the second game of their 2022-23 season on Saturday afternoon at Canada Games Park in St. Catharines against the defending OUA champion Brock Badgers, falling 2-1 in overtime.

The Gryphons returned to the ice looking to bounce back after a 6-1 loss to the No. 10-ranked Waterloo Warriors on Thursday night but fell just short against a tough Brock team. Although the Gryphons outshot the Badgers 28-23, they were unable to get the go-ahead goal in what was a tie game for over 55 total minutes.

The Gryphons and Badgers would open the game with neither team willing to surrender quality chances or momentum in a scoreless opening 20 minutes. Gryphon goaltender and Brampton, Ontario native, Katie Raymond would make 7 saves in the opening frame (26 total) with Badgers goalie Tiffany Hsu making 6 stops to send both teams into the first intermission scoreless. The second period would see all the action with 4th-year family studies and human development major, Mayla Mayer opening the scoring off a feed from Tiana Faccio three minutes into the period to put the Gryphs up 1-0. The Gryphon lead would not last long however, with Brock Badger Mishayla Christensen scoring just 2:26 later to tie the game at 1 apiece.

The third period would prove to be more of the same with both teams playing well defensively. With 4 minutes remaining in the third Hannah Tait would come agonizingly close to giving the Gryphons the go-ahead goal but her shot would ring off the crossbar and out. Regulation would come to a close tied 1-1, sending the Gryphons and Warriors to 3-on-3 overtime. In overtime Tiana Faccio would have the first chance to end the game but her breakaway would be stopped by Tiffany Hsu. Not long after it would be Kaitlyn Colonna who would beat Raymond to give the Badgers a 2-1 victory.

The Gryphons will look to rebound and get into the win column on Friday (Oct. 28) when they travel to Kingston to take on the Queen's Gaels. Puck drop is set for 7:30pm.
