WSCR RECAP: Mazur's Marker Powers Gryphons to Three Points

GUELPH, Ont.- Putting together a complete 90-minute performance, the Guelph Gryphons (3-1-2) earned a well-deserved three points Friday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. Playing the second half of a home and home series with the Waterloo Warriors (0-2-2), the Gryphons came away with a 1-0 victory over the visitors.

After playing to a 1-1 draw on the road on Wednesday against the same Waterloo squad, the Gryphons showed from the opening whistle that they were going to be the aggressors.

Firing nine shots in the first-half, Guelph created numerous opportunities for themselves. Providing tons of pressure, it soon would pay off for the home side just after the half an hour mark.

Playing in the 31st minute, Brooke Morton was able to set up Venessa Mazur, and the Mississauga product found the back of the net to give the Gryphons a 1-0 lead.

Throughout the second-half, the Gryphons continued to push for a second goal. Although in the end they were unable to add to their lead, it was not for lack of trying, firing another six shots in the half.

On the score-sheet, the Gryphons wound up outshooting the Warriors 15-5, with 12 of their shot attempts on target, and three of Waterloo's five attempts winding up on goal. All three of those Waterloo attempts were handled confidently by Guelph goalkeeper Brooke Davidson, who tallied her second clean sheet of the season.

Coming away with points of five of their first six games of the 2021 season, the Gryphs will look to continue that trend on October 22nd when they return to the pitch at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. Getting underway at 6:00pm, Guelph will take on the Brock Badgers in the first half of a home and home two game set.
