MHKY RECAP (Exhibition): Gryphons Suffer Shoot-Out Loss to Ridgebacks

GUELPH, Ont. – Continuing to tune up for the 2021 OUA regular season, the Guelph Gryphons returned to the ice Thursday evening for their second exhibition contest. Hosting the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks at the Gryphon Centre, the visitors ultimately got the better of the Gryphs in a shoot-out 3-2 (2-0).

As the game got underway, neither side was able to find the back of the net. Although the Gryphons went on to outshoot the Ridgebacks 9-5 in the opening frame the game remained scoreless going into the intermission. However, it did not take very long for the first goal of the contest to be scored once the second period got underway. Working on the power-play, Connor Bramwell wound up getting the Gryphons on the board for a second straight game.Connor Bramwell Only 1:37 had elapsed from the middle frame before Bramwell's power-play marker. Despite Bramwell giving Guelph the lead, it was Ontario Tech who was able to create majority of the opportunities in the middle twenty. Ultimately, the Ridgebacks put ten shots on goal in the second period compared to Guelph's four.

Still leading 1-0 entering the third, the Gryphon's advantage was quickly neutralized. A little over three minutes into the final frame of regulation, the Ridgebacks found the back of the net on a power-play of their own. Then only three minutes after that, Ontario Tech scored again to take their first lead of the game. Despite falling behind, it did not take very long for the Gryphons to erase the deficit. Only a mere 28 seconds had passed since Ontario Tech had jumped out in front, before Zach Roberts beat Ridgeback's goalie Michael Bullion tying the game 2-2.

Still tied 2-2 after sixty minutes of play, the two teams went to overtime. In the extra session, both squads mustered three shots on goal but neither side was able to find the game winner before Ontario Tech won the game in a shoot-out 2-0.

In goal for the Gryphons, both Colton Incze and Gabe Mallot-Hill saw time between the pipes. Incze made 19 saves on 21 shots, while Mallot-Hill stopped all five shots he faced leading up to the shoot-out.

Both Guelph and Ontario Tech recorded 26 shots each in the game. Lucas Chiodo, Gio Finoro and Ted McGeen all recorded an assist in the Gryphon's loss.

Now 1-0-1 in their exhibition schedule, the Gryphons will resume their pre-season Monday afternoon when they play host to the Nipissing Lakers. Puck drop is set for 2:00pm from the Gryphon Centre.
