GUELPH, Ont. - Right in the thick of the OUA playoff hunt, the Guelph Gryphons knew it was crucial to take care of business Saturday afternoon at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Centre. Hosting the Lakehead Thunderwolves for the second straight day, the Gryphons used a team effort en route to securing a three set sweep (25-11, 25-17, 25-7) over the visitors.
Using their strong net play, both attacking and blocking, the Gryphons were able to force the Thunderwolves to scramble for much of the three sets.
From the very first serve, Guelph did a tremendous job of setting the tone of the set. Using big attacks from the likes of Ally Proulx and Jade Ziebarth, Guelph was able to take control of the set early going up 10-3. From there, the Gryphons continued to further build their lead before taking the opening set 25-11.
Having won four straight sets over the Thunderwolves going back to the pervious day, Guelph found themselves having to deal with a strong push back from the visitors. Keeping the score tight right up to the technical time-out, the Thunderwolves were finding much more success. Lakehead held a slim 16-15 lead over Guelph at the technical time-out, however, from then on the Gryphons were able to pour on the pressure. Winning ten of the next eleven points the Gryphons took the second set 25-17.
Up 2-0 in the match, the Gryphons made sure to close the contest out in three.
Using a similar method to the first set, the home side quickly grabbed control of the third set and were able to build a comfortable lead. Going up 7-2 initially and forcing a Lakehead time-out, the Gryphons never looked back. Continuing to use their potent attack, Guelph went on to win the set 25-7.
"It was pretty much a carbon copy of the match yesterday," said Gryphon's head coach Paul Funk. "It could have very easily gotten away from us in that second set with us down at the technical time-out. We were able to bear down at the end of the second though and make a lot of plays and then start strong in the third and put a lot of pressure on them."
On the scoresheet the Gryphons were led by Cassidy Collins who tallied eight kills, while Jessica Chung, Ziebarth and Proulx each had seven of their own. Alex Curran recorded a team high 31 assists.
Now 8-6 on the season, the Gryphons will head to Hamilton on Friday for a pivotal match-up with the McMaster Marauders.
