QUEBEC CITY, Que. - Thursday evening at the Vanier Cup awards gala in Quebec City, a pair of Gryphon football players received national recognition after being named 2019 U SPORTS All-Canadians. Clark Barnes, a star kick returner in his first year at the University of Guelph, was named a First Team All-Canadian on special teams, while fourth-year offensive lineman Coulter Woodmansey was named a U SPORTS Second Team All-Canadian. The awards gala officially kicked off the festivities around the
55th Vanier Cup presented by Promutuel Insurance, which will culminate on Saturday at TELUS-Université Laval Stadium, where the Calgary Dinos and Montreal Carabins are set to battle for Canadian university football supremacy, starting at 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT. The championship match is televised live on
CBC and
TVA Sports.

Clark Barnes - First Team U SPORTS All-Canadian
In just his first season in the OUA,Â
Clark Barnes has become only the sixth individual in program history to earn All-Canadian honours on special teams.

Barnes burst onto the scene in 2019, quickly establishing himself as one of the most dangerous returners in the country. The 6-2, 200 lbs arts major from Brampton, got his OUA career off to a dream start, recording a kick return for a touchdown in each of his first three games of the season. In Week 1, Barnes took the season's opening kick back 100-yards for a score versus McMaster.
That was followed by a 106-yard kick return on the game's opening play in Week 2 and Carleton. And an unthinkable third straight game with a kick return for a touchdown would come in Week 3 versus York, where Barnes took one back 82-yards up the sideline for his third major of the season. Despite missing a significant amount of the second half of the season due to injury, Barnes still finished 4th in the OUA in kick return yards, needing just 13 kick returns to rack up 486 yards (averaging an OUA-best 37.4 yards per kick return).

Coulter Woodmansey - Second Team U SPORTS All-Canadian
Joining Barnes as a 2019 U SPORTS All-Canadian isÂ
Coulter Woodmansey, a fourth-year offensive lineman from Toronto who earns as a Second Team All-Canadian.Â

The 6-foot-5, 300 lbs Woodmansey continues to garner attention from CFL scouts. After impressing at the U SPORTS East-West Bowl in May of 2019, Woodmansey anchored the Gryphons up front, helping the Gryphons finish 3rd in the OUA in rushing with 1,413 yards (176.6 per game).
Woodmansey anchored the Gryphons up front throughout the season, helping the unit overcome some key injuries, which included losing an OUA all-star and CFL draft pick in Eric Starczala for the bulk of the season. In Woodmansey, the Gryphons boasted an All-Canadian talent up front, who was able to open up lanes for a youthful group of Gryphon running backs, with four different ball carriers all getting touches in 2019, all of whom were either rookies or sophomores.Â
Woodmansey becomes the second Gryphon offensive lineman in the past three years to garner All-Canadian honours, following in the footsteps of his former teammate Andrew Pickett, who was named a First Team All-Canadian in 2017.
