WHKY Recap: Gryphons Sweep Weekend Home Stand With Win Over Nipissing

GUELPH, Ont. - After picking up a 3-0 victory with an empty-net goal yesterday, the Guelph Gryphons decided to follow the exact same script Sunday afternoon at the Gryphon Centre. Hosting the undefeated Nipissing Lakers, the Gryphons scored once in each period, while not surrendering a goal all game long en route to a second straight 3-0 victory.

With Alexandrea Davidson recording the shut-out in her first career OUA game Saturday afternoon, this time it was Aurore Beaulieu's turn to hold down the fort in the Gryphon's goal. She stopped all 28 shots she faced giving the Guelph offence all kinds of leeway to work with and just like yesterday the offence was able to capitalize to the tune of one goal in each period.

In the first frame the Gryphons and Lakers went back and forth trying to force the play in to each other's end. Then as play progressed, very quickly special teams became the story for the rest of the period. Having taken back to back penalties, the Gryphons found themselves having to kill off a 5-on-3 for nearly a minute and a half. Guelph put together a strong kill and held off the Lakers to gather some momentum before getting the same opportunity. Later in the period, it was Nipissing who found themselves taking a pair of penalties giving the Gryphons a 5-on-3 opportunity which they would take advantage of. Standing on the doorstep, Nicole MacKinnon had a pass land on her stick and she quickly deposited it into the back of the net to give Guelph a 1-0 lead with 3:04 to play in the opening period.

Taking their 1-0 advantage into the second, the Gryphons worked to add to their lead and were able to just shy of the six minute mark. Working down the left side, Karli Shell fired a pass out in front of the goal to Mayla Mayer and she put home her 4th goal of the season to double the Gryphons lead to 2-0. Although Nipissing would out-shoot the Gryphons in the period, Guelph was able to defend their own end well and keep their 2-0 lead in tact heading to the final twenty minutes of play.

Up by a pair of goals, the Gryphons played a clean third period not allowing the Lakers many opportunities to try and trim the advantage. Guelph held Nipissing to just six shots in the period, while limiting overall scoring chances as well. With a strong defensive mindset, Guelph forced the visitors to pull their goalie in the late stages to try and create a spark. All that was created in the end though was Hannah Tait sending the puck into the empty cage for the second straight day to put the game out of reach.

"It was a huge win for us," said Gryphon's head coach Rachel Flanagan. "We knew if we put together another 60-minute game that we would be able to come out on top. Our girls made some great adjustments going into the third period to lock this one down."

"In the first couple of periods we found that Nipissing was breaking out of their own zone really easy, so we just adjusted our fore-check a little bit and the girls we're very meticulous about how they did it. I think Nipissing then had a hard time creating the plays that they wanted to."

Having secured 13 of a possible 15 points over their last five games, the Gryphons will look to keep the good times rolling on Friday when they return to action in Kingston against the Queen's Gaels. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30pm.
