LONDON, Ont. - After falling behind two sets to none against the U SPORTS No. 10-ranked Western Mustangs on Wednesday night, the Guelph Gryphons women's volleyball team didn't have much to feel good about at the start of set 3. However, somewhere along the line, the Gryphons found their game and turned what looked like an easy Western win into a 5 set war before finally succumbing 15-11 in the deciding set. Guelph had a number of players who struggled early on but kept grinding until they found a better level of performance.
Head coach Paul Funk said, "We weren't near our top level for large stretches tonight, but I was very pleased with how we fought to stay in the match. Unfortunately, we couldn't pull it out in the end." Guelph's offence was led by middle blocker
Lisa Wedel with 16 points (11 kills, 3 aces, 2 blocks) followed by
Jessica Chung with 14 (10 kills, 4 aces) and
Ally Proulx with 13 (11 kills, 1 ace, 1 block) while setter
Alex Curran dishes out 37 assists and libero
Tara Tanasijevic had 21 digs on defense. The Gryphons' next action is Saturday at 6pm on the road against the Windsor Lancers.
