TORONTO, Ont. - Concluding their regular season on the road, the No. 6-ranked Guelph Gryphons went into Varsity Stadium Saturday afternoon in Toronto and took care of business against the Toronto Varsity Blues. Taking on a team that not only boasts the top passing offence in the OUA, but also had nothing to lose, the Gryphons used their rushing attack to down Toronto 40-26. With the win, the Gryphons finished the OUA regular season 6-2 and in 3rd place in the OUA standings. Guelph will now host Carleton (4-4) on October 26 in an OUA quarter-final matchup.
Throughout the contest, the Gryphons were able to run the ball with plenty of success, allowing them to open up the passing game and control the clock.
Guelph racked up a season-high 369 yards rushing on the day, with three different Gryphon players eclipsing the 100-yard mark (Kwame Osei - 129, Theo Landers 113, Juwan Jeffrey 102).
After Toronto got on the board first in the game with a long touchdown pass, followed by a rouge on the kick-off, the Gryphons offence put together a 10-play drive that would ultimately net them an 18-yard field goal from Eric Stranz narrowing the Toronto lead to 8-3. Then on their next drive, the Gryphon's offence continued to roll. Having moved the ball down to the Toronto 25, Theo Landers handed the ball off to Juwan Jeffrey who scampered into the Toronto end zone to give the Gryphons their first lead of the game. Then, as if the game was showing a replay, Guelph's defence came up with another quick stop to get their offence the ball back, and again the Gryphons marched down the field and scored a major.
This time is was Landers giving the ball to Clark Barnes on a jet sweep. Barnes got to the right edge and took off for the 10-yard touchdown run.
Holding a 17-8 advantage after the first quarter, the Gryphon's defence continued to swallow up the Varsity Blues offence. Deep in their own end, Varsity Blues quarterback Clay Sequeira started scrambling in his own end zone after feeling pressure from Alain Cimankinda. Sequeira then threw the ball away to avoid the sack, but was called for intentional grounding in the end zone which resulted in a safety and two more points for Guelph.
Following the safety, the two teams exchanged possessions for most of the 2nd quarter. However, the home side got a drive together late in the half that ended with Sequeira hitting Nolan Lovegrove in the end zone for a touchdown.
Sequeira then hit Lovegrove again on the next play for a two-point conversion and just like that the Gryphon's lead was down to 19-16 at halftime.
Despite the late 2nd quarter push from Toronto, the Gryphons came out ready and focused in the second half, and began to pull away. On the opening drive of the 3rd quarter, Landers found A.J. Chase for an 8-yard touchdown. The major gave Guelph a two-possession lead.
After the Varsity Blues scored a field goal early in the 4th quarter, the Gryphons were able to roll the rest of the way. Guelph scored a pair of Theo Landers rushing touchdowns, the first one from 12-yards out and the second one from 24-yards out, to pull away from the home side. Toronto would score on the final play of the game, but that was as close as they would get.
In the game, Landers finished 23-33 for 285 yards and a touchdown to go with his 113 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. Kwame Osei and Juwan Jeffrey also had big games on the ground. Osei ran for 129 yards on just seven carries, while Jeffrey tallied 117 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. Kade Belyk had the biggest game catching the ball for Guelph, finishing the contest with seven receptions and 109 yards. On defence, the Gryphons were disruptive all game long. As a team they tallied four sacks, a forced and recovered fumble, as well as a highlight reel interception from Dotun Aketepe.
Now with the OUA regular season in the books, that means it is time for playoffs. Thanks to their victory, the Gryphons finished at 6-2, tied with the McMaster Marauders for 2nd place. However, because of McMaster's season opening win over the Gryphons back on August 25th, the Marauders will finish in 2nd, while the Gryphons will finish in 3rd. That means Guelph will be at home on Saturday, October 26 to host the 6th-seeded Carleton Ravens in an OUA quarter-final. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00pm from Alumni Stadium.
