GUELPH, Ont. - With just three points separating Guelph and McMaster heading into Friday night's match at the Gryphon Soccer Complex, it came as no surprise that the two teams played a very even 90 minutes of soccer. So even in fact, that the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
In what was the Gryphon's final home game of the 2019 OUA regular season, Guelph managed to get on the board first. In the 23rd minute of play, the Gryphons jumped out in front. Working towards the McMaster box, Sydney Vanderhoef managed to put the ball on the boot of Kate Knafelc who made no mistake giving Guelph the early lead.
However, for the Gryphons, the lead was relatively short-lived. It was only eleven minutes later when the Marauders evened up the game. Playing in the 34th minute, McMaster was able to fire home their lone goal of the match.
Throughout the rest of the contest, the two teams went back and forth with each other, but neither side was ever able to pull ahead. Then in the dying moments, the Gryphons were awarded one last chance. After playing 90 minutes and into injury time, the Gryphons received a penalty kick following an illegal McMaster tackle in the box. Kaylin Twardowski stepped up to the spot, struck the ball but just sent it outside of the left post. The final whistle then blew shortly after bringing the match to an end.
With the single point, the Gryphons improved to 7-1-5 on the season. They will now head to Waterloo on Sunday to wrap up their 2019 regular season.
