MHKY Recap: Crazy First Period Leads Gryphons to Victory Over Rams

GUELPH, Ont. - Before you could even blink Wednesday night at the Gryphon Centre, the Ryerson Rams and the Guelph Gryphons both had their offences going at full force. With eight goals scored in the first 16:55 of the game, the Gryphons had themselves a 5-3 lead after one period of play and ultimately went on to down the Rams 6-3. The victory marked Guelph's third straight win, and their second defeat of the Rams in less than a week after beating Ryerson 5-2 in Toronto on Thursday.

The back and forth began early in the game with the visitors getting on the board first only 3:29 into the contest. However, the Gryphon's captain quickly responded for Guelph. Mikkel Aagaard continued his early season hot streak by scoring his 4th goal in his last three games to get Guelph back on even ground. Unfortunately for the Gryphons it was just over a minute later when Ryerson regained the lead on a Cavin Leth goal. The Gryphons were able to get things turned around after Ryerson had taken their second lead of the game though. Trailing 2-1, Guelph came back with four unanswered markers in the span of eight minutes and thirty-four seconds. First it was Todd Winder, who broke in on a breakaway for the home side and made no mistake to tie the game 2-2. Then with the man-advantage, Aagaard set up Winder for a one-timer in the slot, and again Winder was able to bury the puck giving Guelph their first lead of the contest. From there, Connor Bramwell came down the left-wing and snapped a wrist-shot over the blocker of Ryerson goalie Garrett Forrest, before Matt Kenney found the back of the net with the Gryphons short-handed. The Rams were able to stop the bleeding a bit though coming back with a goal of their own on the same power-play.

In the middle frame both teams had their chances but neither were able to capitalize as the score remained 5-3 heading to the third.

In the final twenty minutes of play, it seemed as if it was just going to be more of the same. However, late in the period two key Guelph forwards had other ideas. After stealing the puck, Winder drove down the right wing into Ryerson territory before setting up Aagaard out front and the captain buried his second goal of the contest to seal a 6-3 Gryphons victory.

"We got off to a great start by recovering from Ryerson's early goal, and then taking the lead and never giving it back, which was great," said Gryphon's Head Coach Shawn Camp. "That said, we thought the first period was very sloppy and we'll have to be tidier going forward. But we didn't give up anything after the first period so we are pleased with that. Overall, getting a big win against Ryerson is a big result anytime."

In goal for the Gryphons, Andrew Masters made 29 saves on 32 shots to pick up the win. Offensively, Guelph was led by their captain Mikkel Aagaard who tallied two goals and two assists, along with Todd Winder who picked up two goals and one assist.

The Gryphons will now take their 3-1 record to Ottawa this weekend. The Gryphons will battle the Carleton Raves on Friday before taking on the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday. Guelph will return home on October 23rd when they play host to the Waterloo Warriors.
