GUELPH, Ont. – Saturday afternoon at the Gryphon Centre Arena, the No. 9-ranked Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team kept sole possession of first-place in the OUA standings with a convincing 3-0 win over the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks. The Gryphons got off to a fast start, with fourth-year forward
Claire Merrick opening the scoring just over three minutes into the opening period. Merrick, a Landscape Architecture major from Oakville, ranks second on the team with 14 points, and now has four goals on the season, three of which have come within the past two weeks.
Guelph would extend the lead to 2-0 later in the 1st period thanks to a power play goal from assistant captain
Miranda Lantz, her 10th of the season, moving her into a tie for 3rd in among the OUA's leading goal scorers.
Rounding out the Gryphon scoring on the day was former Ohio State Buckeye
Katie Mikkelsen. The 5-foot-11 NCAA transfer, who is now in her second season with the University of Guelph women's hockey program, notched her fifth goal of the season to give the Gryphons a comfortable 3-0 lead.
That was more than enough for fifth-year goalie
Valerie Lamenta, who had a relatively quiet night, needing to make just 10 saves to record the shutout.
The Record
Guelph is 12-2-1-2 (wins-losses-OT/SO wins-OT/SO losses)
