MVB: Gryphons Fall in Straight Sets at U of T

TORONTO, Ont. - Saturday afternoon at the University of Toronto, the Guelph Gryphons men's volleyball team suffered a straight sets loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues. Sets scores were 17-25, 16-25 and 22-25.

With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 3-4 on the season while U of T improves to 7-3. The match marked Guelph's first regular season action since the December break, with fifth-year left side Zach Newman leading the way for the Gryphons with a team high 13 kills. Defensively, the Gryphons struggled to find ways to slow the U of T attack, with the Varsity Blues racking up an impressive .410 hitting percentage, with Chris Towe (13 points) and Alex Barnes (10 points) accounting for a bulk of the damage for U of T's attack.

The Gryphons will be right back in action once again on Sunday (Jan. 13) with a road game against the Trent Excalibur. Match time in Peterborough is set for 6pm.

Gryphon Take:
"We've been dealing with some really significant injuries this season and today had to start a new lineup that had a hard time against a really potent U of T lineup. Toronto out-passed and out-dug us tonight. Zach (Newman) was really good for us and rookie Gideon Dresser did a great job in his first OUA start as a setter. ~ Gryphon head coach Cal Wigston

The Record:
Guelph is 3-4
