WSCR: Gryphons Still Unbeaten After 1-0 Win at Waterloo

Mazur Scores the Match-winner Against Tough Warriors Side

WATERLOO, Ont. – OUA opponents are finding out that the Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team doesn't have many flaws. The No. 9 Gryphons put in another workmanlike performance and remained unbeaten through nine games after defeating the Waterloo Warriors 1-0 on the road Sunday afternoon.

Second-year striker Venessa Mazur had the match-winner for the Gryphons, who have now won six straight, and have incredibly allowed just one goal all season. That came back on Aug. 29 when Guelph drew 1-1 with York in Toronto.

In a competitive meeting between the two sides, Mazur would ultimately secure the three points on a nicely-worked goal in the 64th minute. Her strike partner Victoria Hinchliffe was sprung loose in the area and the third-year forward slid a beautiful ball across the front of goal to the back left post, which Mazur tapped in after making a great run.

It was then up to the Guelph's defenders and goalkeeper Libby Brenneman to preserve the clean sheet, something that's been commonplace in the first half of the OUA season. Brenneman was poised down the stretch and controlled her area with Waterloo pressing for an equalizer, while the backline of Andrea Cimino, Nicole Brown-Shaw, Alyssa Hodgson, and Jacqueline Madogo were exceptional throughout the match, dealing with whatever the Warriors threw their way, in the air or on the ground.

Turning point
Mazur's goal was the most influential moment in a tough match that the Gryphons were ultimately thrilled to win without conceding.

Gryphon Take

"Waterloo didn't give an inch. They were very strong in defence and quick in transition, making it difficult for us to defend. We had some good chances early but it just didn't come off. The longer the game went, the more determined Waterloo became. We were able to score but then had to be solid and defend. It wasn't easy."

"The big key for us is that the team is attacking and defending together. Everyone is contributing in both phases." – head coach Shayne Campbell

The Record
Guelph is 7-0-2.
