KINGSTON, Ont. – There's momentum building with the Guelph Gryphons men's rugby team. The 2017 OUA silver medalists have been implementing a new approach through the first month of the new season and they're beginning to reap the rewards. Guelph started fast and cruised to a 63-12 win over the RMC Paladins in Kingston Saturday afternoon, improving to a perfect 3-0 record.
Alexander Williamson and
MacLain Wakefield had two trys each, while five other Gryphons managed to touch down in a decisive performance. Guelph was also a 9-for-9 in convert attempts, with
Aria Keshoofy nailing five,
Mario Van Der Westhuizen hitting two, and Wakefield adding one.
The visitors jumped on the Paladins quickly, building an early 21-0 lead. Guelph is a much faster team than in past seasons and it showed in the offensive approach as RMC had trouble with the tempo that was established. It was 35-12 after 40 minutes and the Gryphons turned it on again in the second half, scoring two quick trys to put the match away.
Turning point
Guelph's third try was a bit of a killer for the Paladins. RMC had a few good moments after that but the 21-0 deficit proved impossible to overcome.
Gryphon Take
"The boys came out really firing, which is strange for us. We often start slow, especially after being on the bus to Kingston for three or four hours. There were a few periods where we let our foot off the gas and RMC made us pay. But we kept the tempo really high. We've been spending time on that and maintaining it. We're getting better and feel like we're headed towards a complete 80-minute effort." –
head coach Cory Hector
