WATERLOO, Ont. – Sunday afternoon in Waterloo, the Gryphons men's basketball team was officially eliminated from the 2018 OUA playoffs after suffering a 75-61 loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 5-17 on the season while Laurier improves to 10-12. The game was played at the Manulife Sportsplex at RIM Park with Laurier's regular home court currently undergoing repairs following water damage sustained earlier this year.
A slow start on Sunday afternoon would prove to be too much for the Gryphons to overcome, as Laurier started the game by forcing four straight turnovers and built a commanding 20-7 after the opening quarter of play. The Gryphons committed 19 turnovers on the day and were trailing by 17 at the half and 22 after three quarters.
Tommy Yanchus led the Gryphons with 16 points and 8 rebounds, while fifth year guard
Daniel Dooley chipped in with 13 points and 5 rebounds. The Gryphons will close out the 2017-18 season with a pair of home games as they host the Waterloo Warriors on Wednesday (Feb. 14) before hosting Western to honour their seniors on Saturday, Feb. 17.
