MVB: Gryphons Show Grit in 3-1 Win at Brock

Guelph rebounds From Tough Start to Take Three Straight Sets

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons men's volleyball team got back on track Friday night with a great outing on the road. Guelph traveled to St. Catharines and after dropping the first set, reeled off three straight in a 3-1 (15-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-22) win over the Brock Badgers in the Bob Davis Gym.

Zarko Ubiparip and Matthew Baxter paced the offence with match-highs of 15 kills each, while Zachary Newman added 10 more. Setter Oliver Hissink, who entered the night ranked 10th in OUA assists with 105, had a team-best 27 to go along with 10 digs, with Benjamin Kissack adding another 13 digs.

It was a great turnaround for the Gryphons, who entered the night on a two-match losing streak. It didn't look good early as they dropped the first set producing as many errors as they did kills with 8 in each category. But Guelph quickly grabbed momentum with 15 kills and a staggering .650 hitting percentage to take the second set before going up 2-1 with another strong showing in a 25-20 third.

The Gryphons closed well, registering 16 kills and a .297 hitting percentage in the fourth and decisive set.

It was a week of experimenting for Guelph as the team is still missing middle players Kendrick Kerr and Samuel Nothnagel, who recently suffered a serious knee injury. But the Gryphons got a good performance from 6-5 rookie Arjun Selhi. He stepped into that role and played extremely well, particularly in the service game.

Ubiparip and Baxter, who always seems to play his best against Brock, were sharp in helping the team get back over the .500 mark on the season.

Gryphon Take
"We regrouped after the first set and said 'Let's try steal some momentum back.' We jumped into the second and poured it on. The guys just dug in. We fought back today and showed some really good resilience. This was one of those must-win games." – head coach Cal Wigston

The Record
Guelph is 3-2.
