THUNDER BAY, Ont. – There aren't many more difficult places to play volleyball than Lakehead's CJ Sanders Fieldhouse. But the Guelph Gryphons women's team looked right at home on the court in Thunder Bay. Guelph overcame a big third-set deficit to defeat the Thunderwolves 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-22) and sweep the weekend doubleheader on the road.
Michaela Hellinga and
Noa Pijl had 9 kills each, while
Hazel Atkins added 7 kills, 4 assists and and 4 digs. Libero
Tara Tanasijevic had a team-high 13 digs with setter
Alex Curran providing 31 assists.
It was an emotional win Guelph, which produced two excellent sets in building a 2-0 lead before stalling in the third. The Gryphons fell behind 16-8 in that set but played scrappy from then on, working their way back in before ending it.
Guelph took advantage of the fact that Lakehead made a few more errors than usual, with 7 in each of the first two sets before committing 3 more in the third. The Gryphons played steady early and then closed with a flurry.
Guelph had 36 kills to Lakehead's 26.
Gryphon Take
"It was a really good job by our group to not to give up. The girls were pumped to make that comeback and it was very big for us to get two wins up here. When we make this trip, it's always difficult. Lakehead plays well at home. Their crowds make a lot of noise and create a lot of energy. It's a tough place to play. This was good for the girls mentally." –
