TORONTO, Ont. – Through the first month of the 2018-19 OUA regular season, the Guelph Gryphons men's basketball team has let a few games slip away. Saturday night at York University, they made sure that wouldn't happen again. The Gryphons (1-5) picked up a convincing 105-92 road win over the York Lions (2-3). The Gryphons had four players score in double figures, with fourth-year guard
Tommy Yanchus leading the way with a game-high 28 points, followed by 25 points from rookie guard
Malcolm Glanville.
The Gryphons got off to a hot start, building up a 31-14 lead after the opening quarter of play. The Gryphons shot 55% from the floor in that opening quarter and were 4-of-7 from beyond. Guelph also did not commit a single turnover in the opening quarter and took care of the ball throughout the night, committing just 8 turnovers in the game.
After York battled back to make it a six-point game heading to the fourth quarter, the Gryphons would end any hopes of a Lions' comeback by opening the final frame with a 10-0 run.
The Gryphons were able to get to the free throw line seemingly at will and shot an efficient 84.4% from the charity stripe (38-45). Malcolm Glanville did most of his damage from the free throw line, going 14-15 from the stripe on the evening. The Gryphons also won the rebounding battle 39-29 with third-year guard
Banky Alade pulling down a team-high 12 boards to go with his 17 points.
Gryphon Take
"The start was huge for us. We've been struggling with that the last few weeks. We've also been talking about how we deal with adversity. I thought the guys did a good job tonight showing some resiliency and holding on in what was our fifth straight road game.
We were aggressive at the offensive end. We have the ability to get to the free throw line consistently, and tonight we were able to knock down a high percentage of those. We got a lot of good contributions from up and down the lineup tonight. Tommy (Yanchus) carried us, but Banky (Alade) was solid on boards, Malcolm (Glanville) made a lot from the line and Craig (Valeriote) gave us a spark off the bench with some big threes." ~ Gryphons head coach
