ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The OUA men's rugby regular season is winding down and the Guelph Gryphons know how much results matter at this time of year. The Gryphons went on the road and manufactured a thorough performance in a 74-0 win over the Brock Badgers at Varsity Rugby Field.
Fourth-year flanker
Erich Milne, second-year centre
Dalton Campbell, and rookie centre
Jack Cheshire had two tries each, while second-year fly half
John Sheridan had a try and five converts for the Gryphons, who led 50-0 by the half.
Milne was a force, as was powerful fourth-year flanker
Marcello Wainwright. Positive things happened for the Gryphons whenever those two touched the ball.
Second-year wing
Alexander Williamson was the first of 10 Gryphons to touch down with a try in a match that Guelph utilized several players. Three members of the side earned their first first-team start, including
Collin Smibert,
Kirk Addai Sarfo, and
Quenton McLean Lavado. The trio caught the eye of head coach
Cory Hector with an excellent week of training and were rewarded for their work. Their inclusion helps the depth, especially with the OUA postseason looming.
It was a nice rebound after the Gryphons suffered their first loss of the season, a 40-13 defeat to Queen's in a rematch of the OUA championship match last week at Varsity Field. When Guelph fell to the Gaels in the 2017 regular season, it reeled off three straight wins before the playoffs, outscoring opponents 152-0.
The Gryphons have scored 275 points so far this season, while conceding 90.
Gryphon Take
"We scored early and were able to continue to put up points throughout the first half. We retained the ball through all phases today. Brock defended well but we eventually wore them down and pulled away with our speed." –
head coach Cory Hector
The Record
Guelph is 5-1.
