AJAX, Ont. - The Gryphons impressive run at the 2018 OUA Baseball Championships came to an end on Sunday morning in a 5-2 loss to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. After going a perfect 3-0 during round robin play, the Gryphons fell behind 4-0 to the Varsity Blues and were unable to dig themselves out of the hole against the defending OUA champions.
"U of T's pitcher (Peter Nash) did a great job of locating his fastball, as well as his off-speed pitches, for strikes and really kept our hitters off balance," said Gryphons head coach
Dean Mariani. "We were able to put together good at bats the second and third time ts through the order but we just weren't able to get the big hits when we needed them."
The Gryphons recorded five hits on the day, two of which came from fourth-year infielder
Robert Wolfer. Veteran
Sam Salemi got the start for the Gryphons and surrendered 4 runs (3 earned) over his 4 innings of work.
Mitch Over went 3.2 IP in relief allowing 1 run (unearned) while striking out four. Toronto's Peter Nash went the distance, allowing just 1 run over 9 innings. The Varsity Blues would go on to fall to the Laurier Golden Hawks in the OUA championship game. The Gryphons run to the semi-finals marks the second time in three seasons they have advanced to the final four at the conference championship tournament.
