GUELPH, Ont. – Saturday afternoon at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, the Gryphons women's basketball team suffered an 84-67 loss to the OUA West-leading McMaster Marauders. The Marauders (14-4) led by 10 at halftime and 15 heading to the fourth, were led by fourth year guard Hilary Hanaka (Hamilton, ON) who scored 21 of her game-high 26 points in the second half.
After a tight opening quarter in which the Gryphons trailed by just one, the Marauders would start to pull away in the latter stages of the opening half, limiting Guelph to just a pair of made free throws over the final five minutes of the second quarter.
The Gryphons fought back to trim the deficit to single digits on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter but the Marauders were quick to answer, with Hanaka helping to provide a response with a made three pointer with 2:50 remaining to push the McMaster lead back to 12.
Four Gryphons scored in double figures with fourth year guard
Megan Brenkel coming off the bench for a team-high 13 points.
The Gryphons (8-10) will next be in action on Friday, Feb. 2 when they host the Algoma Thunderbirds (2-16). The Gryphons and Thunderbirds will also square off on Saturday, Feb. 3 at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
