WSCR: Gryphons Lose 1-0 to Waterloo

Guelph Miss Chances Against Warriors in Baden Klein Cup Match

GUELPH - Take your chances when they come. Those are the words the Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team will think about after a disappointing result Sunday afternoon. The Gryphons were their typical creative selves but were unable to find the net in a 1-0 loss to the Waterloo Warriors in the Baden Klein Cup match.

With a big crowd on hand at the Gryphon Soccer Complex for the annual fundraising event, Guelph looked poised to score early and earn three big points in the OUA standings. But the finishing in the final third of the pitch was off and the Gryphons couldn't convert the numerous chances they had to score. The Warriors did, getting a goal from Ciara Dunne in the 73rd minute, which was enough to win the match.

"We created more than enough," said Guelph coach Shayne Campbell. "We hit the post, we were in one-on-one with the keeper, we had four or five clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities.

"You rue the chances you miss. We can't afford to do that at this level."

Guelph (6-3-1) created a couple excellent chances shortly after the opening whistle, getting the ball into the box on two occasions but both shot attempts from in close went wide of Waterloo goalkeeper Mady McDonald.

With the match scoreless at the half, Waterloo (4-1-4) saw more of the ball in the second 45 minutes and pushed forward.

The Warriors got the breakthrough goal in the 73rd minute when Dunne was first to a loose ball in the Guelph area, getting it behind goalkeeper Libby Brenneman. The Gryphons almost replied minutes later when Sydney Johnson cut a ball into the Waterloo area from the right flank but Victoria Hinchliffe was tied up by a defender and unable to finish.

Guelph would come close again in the 90th minute when first-year midfielder Alana MacLean curled in a beautiful left-footed ball from outside of the Waterloo 18-yard box, just missing the top right corner past a diving McDonald. The Gryphons had 10 shots in the game, forcing McDonald into making five saves.

"They definitely came on in the second half but we put those chances away and it's a different game," said Campbell.

Conditions were difficult with the extreme heat. The temperature on the Gryphon Soccer Complex turf was estimated to be near 60 degrees Celsius.

Despite the temperature, there was a great turnout for the Baden Klein Cup. The annual match raises money for Wiskott Aldrich Syndrome, a rare genetic immunodeficiency disease. Baden Klein is the nephew of men's soccer coach Keith Mason. The 14-year-old acts a team manager and was on hand for the match.

Guelph is back in action at home on Sunday, Oct. 1 to host the Laurier Golden Hawks. Match time is 1pm.
