GUELPH, ON - Thursday night on the campus of the University of Guelph, the Gryphons men's hockey team saw their 2016-17 season officially come to an end following a disappointing 6-2 loss to the York Lions. With the result, York wins the best-of-three OUA West Semi-final series 2-0 and advances to the conference's final four.
In Game 1 on Wednesday night, the Gryphons had a forgettable two minute stretch in the 3rd period that cost them the game. On Thursday night in Game 2, the Gryphons had a forgettable 2nd period that cost them their season. After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, York poured in five goals in the 2nd period, three of which came on the man advantage. The Gryphons racked up 36 minutes of penalties on the night and conceded a pair of goals during 5-on-3 situations during the 2nd period. Aside from the nightmare of a 2nd period, the Gryphons actually outscored York 2-1 over the remaining 40 minutes of play.
With the game still in striking distance early in the 2nd period, the Gryphons, who outshot the Lions 34-31 on the night, had several good scoring chances denied by York's standout goalie Mack Shields. The Lions opened the scoring 1:27 into the 2nd period and extended their lead to 2-0 just over three minutes into the period. York would go on to score three goals in less than a four minute span to cap the five goal outburst to take a commanding 5-0 lead to the 3rd.
Cody Thompson and
Manny Gialedakis would salvage goals for the Gryphons in the final period.
The York Lions, who entered the OUA West playoffs as the No. 2-seed, will now face the winner of the Ryerson/Windsor series in the OUA West Final.
