WVB: Gryphons Four-Game Win Streak Snapped with Road Loss at Ryerson

TORONTO, ON - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team had their four-game win streak snapped on the road Friday night with a 3-1 loss against the Ryerson Rams. Set scores were 25-21, 7-25, 20-25 & 15-25.

The first set saw a back and forth battle between the teams with the Gryphons leading 16-14 at the technical timeout. A 5-0 Guelph run later in the set allowed them to pull away and win the set 25-21. Set 2 started poorly for the Gryphons as they fell behind 5-0 and had to call a timeout to try and regroup. Numerous unforced errors and an inability to stop Ryerson's middle Theanna Vernon allowed the Rams to run away with the set winning 25-7. The third set was closer through the early going with Ryerson ahead 16-14 at the timeout. The Rams used a short 3-0 run to build their lead later and take the set 25-20. Another poor start saw Guelph fall behind 5-1 in set 4 but they battled to within a couple of points. However, another run by Ryerson allowed them to take a 16-11 lead into the timeout. The Gryphons never got closer than 4 points the rest of the way and a 6-0 run finished the set and the match at 25-15.

Gryphons head coach Paul Funk stated, "After the first set, we got our butts whipped in almost every phase of the game. We made far too many unforced errors against a good Ryerson team and when we weren't making errors, they outplayed us on those points too. We will end up playing them in the OUA quarterfinals in 2 weeks and we will have to show better execution and more grit than we did today." Victoria Golebiowski was the top Gryphon in points tonight with 14 (10 kills, 4 aces) followed by Libby Donevan with 12 (8 kills, 1 ace, 3 blocks) while Kayla McMullen led the defense with 13 digs. The Gryphons will wrap up their league schedule next weekend on the road starting on Friday when they face the Trent Excalibur at 6pm.
