WINDSOR, Ont. – The longest active win streak in U SPORTS men's hockey came to an end Saturday night at South Windsor Arena as the Gryphons suffered a 4-1 loss to the Windsor Lancers. With the result, the Gryphons' win streak ends at nine straight games.
Gryphons rookie goalie
Jason Da Silva made 30 saves on the night, including a stunning glove save during a Windsor power play in the 1st period. Late in the opening period, the Lancers would finally solve Da Silva after Lancers' rookie forward Jake Brown would finish off some nice passing to give Windsor a 1-0 lead heading to the 2nd period.
Another big glove save by Da Silva in the 2nd would temporarily keep the deficit at 1-0, but the Lancers would extend the lead to 2-0 after Kody Gagnon's blast from the point at the 7:55 mark would find the back of the net to push the lead to two. With five minutes remaining in the period, the Lancers would take advantage of a turnover during a Gryphon power play. Windsor forward Kyle Hope, who is tied with Gagnon for the Windsor team lead in points, would head the other way on a short-handed breakaway and go high, blocker side to beat Da Silva to make it a 3-0 game.
Gryphons fourth year forward
Seth Swenson would get the Gryphs on the board early in the 3rd period with his second goal in as many nights to make it a 3-1 game, but the Lancers would answer back three and a half minutes later with a power play goal from Chris Scott to restore the three goal lead.
The loss marks the Gryphons first since October 28, when they suffered a 5-3 loss on home ice, also to the Windsor Lancers (6-6-4). The Gryphons outshot the Lancers 36-34 on Saturday, but Lancers goalie Jonathan Reinhart came up with a big performance against the highest scoring team in the OUA West, coming up with several big stops on the night in the Windsor net. The two teams also combined for 33 minutes of penalties in what was yet another heated affair between the two division rivals.
The Gryphons will now head into the exam/Christmas break locked in a three-way tie for 1st place in the OUA West Division standings, tied with Ryerson and York with 23 points for the season. The Gryphons will be back on the ice December 28 & 29 for a pair of exhibition games in Thunder Bay versus Lakehead. The team will resume their OUA regular season schedule on Thursday, January 4 when they host the Toronto Varsity Blues.
