TORONTO, Ont. – Sunday night at York University, the Gryphons men's hockey team picked up an impressive 4-1 win over the defending OUA champion York Lions. With the score tied at 1-1 after the opening 20 minutes, the Gryphons would take control of the game in the 2nd period, with Captain
Scott Simmonds and rookie defenceman
Patrick Kudla each scoring to give the Gryphons a 3-1 lead.
Josh McFadden would add an empty netter late in the 3rd period to seal the impressive road win for the Gryphs, who improve to 4-3-1. For York Lions, who currently sit in first place in the OUA West, it marked just their second loss of the season as they now sit at 7-2-0.
Gryphons' rookie goalie
Jason Da Silva, making his third start of the season, was outstanding, turning away 42 of the 43 shots the York Lions sent his way. In the 2nd period alone, Da Silva was forced to make 19 saves, several of which were of extremely high quality, including a beautiful pad save on a breakaway as well as a pair of big blocker saves to help preserve the Gryphon lead.
After Scott Simmonds finished off a 2-on-1 for his 3rd goal of the season to give the Gryphons a 2-1 lead, rookie defenceman Patrick Kudla, a former draft pick of the Arizona Coyotes, would score his first goal as a Gryphon, firing home through a screen on the power play to push the U of G lead to 3-1.
Cody Thompson opened the scoring for the Gryphons on the night, potting a rebound to tie the game at 1-1 in the 1st period. Thompson's goal came just :29 seconds after York had taken a 1-0 lead.
The Gryphons, winners of three of their last four games, will now return home for a pair of weekend home games. On Friday night (Nov. 10) the Gryphons will host the Lakehead Thunderwolves (4-3-1) and on Saturday (Nov. 11) the Waterloo Warriors will visit the Gryphon Centre. Puck drop for both games is set for 7:30pm.
