WVB: Gryphons Fall in Straight Sets versus No. 7-ranked Marauders

GUELPH, Ont. – Saturday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, the Gryphons women's volleyball suffered a straight-sets loss to the No. 7-ranked McMaster Marauders. Set scores were 25-15, 25-22 & 25-22. With the result, the Gryphons fall to 0-4 on the season while McMaster improves to 2-1.

After getting off to a quick start with the first three points of the match, the Gryphons would struggle to slow down the Marauders mid-way through the set. With the opening set tied at 7-7, the Marauders would go on a 9-2 run to take control of the set.

The Marauders would use similar run midway through the 2nd set. With the set tied at 9-9, McMaster would go on a 10-3 run to put them up 19-12. The Gryphs would fight back, trimming the deficit to 20-18, but the hole would prove to be too deep to dig out of as McMaster would hold on to take the set 25-22.

The Gryphons produced some solid stretches in the 3rd set and were tied at 19-19 before the Marauders pulled away late to seal the match. Gryphon rookie Hazel Atkins led the team with 9 kills and also impressed defensively with 11 digs. Jessica Gormley had 13 points to go with 4 blocks, both team-highs. "One of the things we wanted to accomplish tonight was to out-defend MAC but I don't think we did that," said Gryphons head coach Paul Funk.

The Gryphons will next be in action on Friday (Nov. 10) when they travel to Kingston to face Queen's.
