WBB: Gryphons Pick Up First Win of Season with Impressive Road Win Over Gee-Gees

OTTAWA, Ont. – Saturday night in Ottawa, the Gryphons women's basketball team picked up an impressive 80-66 road win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Four of the Gryphons' five starters scored in double figures, with third year guard Sarah Holmes leading the way with a game-high 19 points. Third year forward Ashley Wheeler also had a big night for U of G, finishing with 10 points, 13 rebounds, 6 blocks and 3 steals. The win marked the first of the season for the Gryphons, who improve to 1-3 on the year, while the Gee-Gees fall to 1-1.

Although it was the Gryphons' best performance of the young season, it didn't start out that way, with the host Gee-Gees starting the game on a 13-2 run. The Gryphs would show some great resolve, answering back by ending the opening quarter on a 9-0 run to trim the deficit to just 2 points heading to the 2nd. The Gryphons would carry that momentum into the 2nd quarter, where they would pour in 28 points to take a 5-point lead into the locker room at the half.

While the 80-points would mark a season-high for the Gryphons, it would be their defence that would prove to be the difference Saturday night, with the team scoring 31 points off turnovers while limiting Ottawa to just 31% shooting from the field.

The Gryphons impressed from beyond the arc, finishing 7-16 from downtown (43%), with Holmes accounting for three of the team's seven three pointers. Guelph also did a great job converting from the charity stripe, going 17-19 on free throws (89.5%).

After opening the season with four straight road games, the Gryphons will now look to carry the momentum from Saturday's win into their home opener on Wednesday (Nov. 8) versus York.
