GUELPH, Ont. – Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, the Gryphons men's volleyball team suffered a 3-sets-to-1 loss to the undefeated Ryerson Rams. Set scores were 25-18, 18-25, 23-25 & 21-25. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 4-5 on the season while the Rams improve to 6-0.
The Gryphons got off to a solid start on Friday night versus the No. 10-ranked team in the country, taking the opening set 25-18. Friday night's matchup marked the first time the Gryphons and Rams have met since squaring off in last season's OUA bronze medal match, which Guelph won in dramatic fashion in five sets. Despite dropping the opening set, the high-powered Rams would respond by sweeping each of the next three sets, with U SPORTS All-Canadian Lucas Coleman (16 kills, 12 digs) leading the way, alongside OUA East Second Team All-Star Brendan Kewin (team-high 19 points).
The Gryphons were led in attack by
Zachary Newman (8 kills, 9 digs, 1 ace) and
Kendrick Kerr (8 kills), while libero
Benjamin Kissack recorded a team-high 14 digs.
The Gryphons have now officially wrapped up the 2017 portion of their regular season schedule and will resume their OUA regular season schedule on Friday, January 19 when they travel to Hamilton to face the McMaster Marauders who currently sit in first-place in the OUA West Division with a 6-1 record.
