GUELPH, Ont. – Wednesday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, the Gryphons men's basketball team suffered an 82-57 loss to the two-time defending OUA champion Ryerson Rams. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 1-5 on the season while Ryerson improves to 4-2.
After the Gryphons pulled to within 9 early in the 2nd half following a made jump shot from
Jonathan Wallace, the Rams would respond in a big way, closing out the 3rd quarter on a 23-6 run to take a commanding lead into the final quarter. The Rams shot 49.3% from the field (34-69) and out-rebounded the Gryphs 38-28. Gryphons' second-year guard
Jordan Sobot came off the bench to score a team-high 12 points on 5-11 shooting, while senior point guard
Daniel Dooley chipped in with 11 points on 5-6 shooting.
"Their length and pressure caused problems for us tonight," said Gryphons head coach
Chris O'Rourke. "We had a few chances to trim the lead down to single digits and really make it a game, but we weren't able to execute offensively. The Rams are a good team and they made us pay for it. We're going to need to execute better offensively and on defence, we need to control the glass."
The Gryphons (1-5) will now turn their attention to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues (3-2), who will visit the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre on Saturday afternoon for a 3pm tip.
"U of T is a similar team as us," added O'Rourke, "so we're going to need to do a better job of controlling play at both ends of the floor."
