WSCR: Gryphons Lose 1-0 to Badgers

Goal Drought Continues for Guelph

ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team has had many things go its way this season. And the good results that have followed, typically a product of hard work, were well deserved. But it's been a tougher stretch for the Gryphons of late. That run continued away at Brock Friday night as Guelph lost a tight 1-0 match to the Badgers at Alumni Field.

Brock got the decisive goal in the 53rd minute on a strange play that proved costly for the visitors. The Badgers sent a through ball behind the Gryphons' defenders, forcing goalkeeper Libby Brenneman to come out and clear. Her kick hit some legs in front of goal, and sent the ball outside the area to Emily Armstrong, who directed a low shot from about 30 yards out that somehow found the back of the Guelph net.

'It was a gritty and opportunistic performance by Brock," said Gryphons' coach Shayne Campbell. "We played well but again had a couple moments where we just couldn't get that final ball in the box.

"We're still having problems scoring."

Guelph hasn't registered a goal in its last three matches, dropping two of them 1-0 and drawing 0-0 with Laurier last time out. Campbell said there hasn't been a dip in effort, just a lack of finishing. The Gryphons hit Brock's crossbar in the first half of the match but couldn't produce a goal.

"We pressed hard for something late on," said Campbell. "We're just not getting that bounce."

The teams last met on Sept. 8 at the Gryphon Soccer Complex, also a 1-0 Brock win. But on Thursday, the OUA ruled that the Badgers had used an ineligible player in four early matches, including the game with Guelph. All four results have been changed to 1-0 losses for Brock, giving the Gryphons (now 7-3-2) an additional win.

Guelph has four matches left in the OUA regular season. The Gryphons host McMaster on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 6 pm.
