WHKY: Gryphons Shutout by Ridgebacks in 1-0 Road Loss

OSHAWA, Ont. - Thursday night in Oshawa, the No. 7-ranked Gryphons women's hockey team appeared to score a game-tying goal late in the 3rd period of their road game against the UOIT Ridgebacks. Instead, following a brief gathering by the officials, the call was reversed, and the goal was waved off for goalie interference. It would prove to be the difference for the host Ridgebacks, who would hold on to beat the Gryphons 1-0. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 1-2-0 on the season while UOIT improves to 2-2-0.

Trailing 1-0 late in the 3rd period, the Gryphons appeared to tie the game at 1-1 when fifth year forward Kelly Gribbons jammed home the would-be tying goal. However, moments after the goal, the Gryphon celebration would be cut short when the officials got together and decided to wave off the goal. That would be as close as the Gryphons would get to solving UOIT's 2nd year goalie Briar Hughes, who turned away all 22 shots sent her way by the Gryphons to record the shutout.

The lone goal of the game for the host Ridgebacks came rookie centre Jamie Bulleid at the 4:36 mark of the 2nd period. Gryphons sophomore goalie Aurore Beaulieu (Calgary, AB) was given her first start of the 2017-18 regular season and turned away 19 of the 20 shots sent her way in the loss. The Gryphons, who lost just three times in regulation all of last season, will face another tough test on Saturday as they head to Kingston to wrap up their three-game road trip with an afternoon matchup against the Queen's Gaels (2-0-1). Puck drop at the Kingston Memorial Centre is set for 2:30pm and can be seen live online at oua.tv.
