MHKY: Rookie Winder Scores Twice in Road Loss to Concordia

MONTREAL, Que. - Rookie Todd Winder capped a memorable weekend in Montreal by scoring two goals on Saturday night at Concordia. Unfortunately for Winder and the rest of the Gryphons men's hockey team, it came in a losing effort as the Gryphs were on the wrong end of a 4-2 score against the Concordia Stingers. With the game tied at 2-2 and just over four minutes remaining in the 2nd period, the Stingers scored the go-ahead goal with a power play marker from Alexis Pepin. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 1-3-1 on the season while the Stingers improve to 3-0-1.

After scoring his first goal as a Gryphon on Friday night against McGill, Winder, who is the cousin of Gryphons captain Scott Simmonds, would add to his account on Saturday night with a pair of goals against the Stingers. After scoring a short-handed goal midway through the 1st period to tie the game at 1-1, Winder was at it again in the 2nd with his 3rd goal of the weekend. The Uxbridge, Ontario native is now in his rookie year at U of G after coming off of a sensational 2016-17 campaign in the OJHL (Ontario Junior A Hockey League) where he was the leading scorer for the Newmarket Hurricanes, scoring 25 goals while also tallying 35 assists.

Fellow Gryphon rookie Jason Da Silva made the first regular season start of his Gryphon career, turning away 35 of the 39 shots sent his way. Two of Concordia's four goals on the night came on the power play as the Gryphons were whistled for 10 infractions on the night with the Stingers going 2-for-10 on the power play.

The Gryphons will now return home for a Thursday night (Oct. 26) game versus Western and will play five of their next six games at the Gryphon Centre.
