MHKY: Gryphons Fall on the Road versus No. 5-ranked McGill

MONTREAL, Que. – Knocking off the No. 5-ranked team in the country in their own arena was always going to be a tough task for the Gryphons men's hockey team. It becomes even more difficult when the bounces aren't going your way.

Friday night at McGill's McConnell Arena in Montreal, the Gryphons lost 7-4 to the No. 5-ranked McGill Redmen in OUA men's hockey action. Cody Thompson's 3rd period goal for the Gryphons trimmed McGill's lead to 5-4. Moments later, however, the Redmen would push the lead back to a two-goal advantage after a fluke ricochet off the boards gave McGill forward Quinn Syrydiuk a gift of a goal to put the Redmen ahead 6-4. McGill forward Alexandre Sills would later add a short-handed goal to complete his hat trick and seal the win for the Redmen. With the result, the Gryphons fall to 1-2-1 on the season while McGill improves to 4-1-0.

The Gryphons got off to a great start Friday night with rookie forward Todd Winder scoring his first as a Gryphon to open the scoring just 2:27 in. The Gryphons would jump out to a 2-0 lead on a power play goal from Manny Gialedakis, his second of the season. McGill would respond by trimming the deficit to 2-1 before exploding for four goals in the 2nd period to take a 5-3 lead into the final period.

Gryphon defenceman Max McCutcheon, who spent a year with the Windsor Lancers before transferring to Guelph, scored his first goal in a Gryphon uniform, but it came in a forgettable 2nd period for the Gryphons where they were outshot 28-8. Overall on the night, the Redmen outshot the Gryphons 53-32.

The Gryphons (1-2-1) will complete their two-day stay in Montreal with a Saturday night game against the Concordia Stingers (2-0-1). The Stingers, who were 3-2 winners at McGill in their regular season opener at McConnell Arena back on October 13, were also in action on Friday night as they won 5-3 at home versus Brock.

Puck drop between the Gryphons and Stingers on Saturday night is set for 7:30pm at Concordia's Ed Meagher Arena.
