WBB: Gryphons Fall on the Road versus Defending OUA Champs

TORONTO, ON - Saturday evening at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, the Gryphons women's basketball team suffered an 87-44 defeat to the defending OUA champion Ryerson Rams. With the result, the Gryphons fall to 1-7 on the season while Ryerson improves to 8-1.

Despite the fact that they were playing for a second consecutive night, the Gryphons did not show any signs of fatigue early on and came out with a strong opening quarter. The opening 10 minutes of play saw a young Gryphons squad go toe-to-toe with one of the top programs in the country as the No. 6-ranked Rams led 20-16 heading to the 2nd quarter. It would be a different story in the 2nd quarter however, as Ryerson was able to showcase why they are defending OUA champions, outscoring Guelph to the tune of 22-6 to take a commanding 20-point lead into the locker room.

The Gryphons were held to just 19.7% shooting from the field as a team (12-61) with second year guard Ashley Wheeler (Stratford, ON) the Gryphs lone scorer in double figures with 13 points on 4-of-10 shooting. The Gryphons were out-rebounded 67-35 on the night.

The Gryphons will next be in action on Friday, January 13 when they return home for a matchup with the Laurier Golden Hawks. The game will mark the first ever varsity basketball game played in the new Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. Game time is set for 6pm and can be seen live online at www.oua.tv.
