MBB: Gryphons Drop Road Game versus Undefeated Rams

TORONTO, ON - It's been almost three years since the Ryerson Rams men's basketball team last suffered a regular season loss on their home court. Although the Gryphons were able to knock off the Rams a season ago when the two teams met up in Guelph, a similar upset would not be in the cards this time around. Saturday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, the Rams defeated the Gryphons 98-76. With the result, the Gryphons fall to 3-5 on the season. The No. 5-ranked Ryerson Rams remain undefeated in 2016-17 and now sit a perfect 9-0 on the season.

After suffering a road loss to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday night, the Gryphons were right back in action on Saturday night against perennial powers Ryerson. The Gryphons got off to a slow start against the defending OUA champion Rams and found themselves trailing by 19 points at the half. The Rams were led by senior guard Ammanuel Diressa (30 points) and freshman forward Keevon Small (26 points). The Gryphons struggled to defend the perimeter with Ryerson knocking down 13 three pointers on the night while shooting 48% from beyond the arc (13-27). The leading scorer for the Gryphons on the night was fourth year guard Jonathan Wallace who poured in 15 points off the bench.

Up next for the Gryphons, a return to Guelph for a matchup with the Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday, January 13. The game will mark the first ever men's basketball game in the new Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. Tip is set for 8pm and the game can be seen live online at www.oua.tv.
