GUELPH, ON - A spectacular 50-save performance from goalie
Keith Hamilton, a pair of 3rd period goals, and a dramatic penalty kill in overtime were still not enough for the Gryphons to escape with the win. Saturday night at the Gryphon Centre, the Gryphons men's hockey team suffered a 4-3, double overtime loss to the visiting Waterloo Warriors. With the result, the Gryphons fall to 13-8-1 on the season while Waterloo improves to 8-11-3.
After a Josh McFadden goal just over two minutes into the game got things going for the Gryphons, the following two and a half periods of play were rather uneventful from a Guelph perspective. The Gryphs found themselves trailing 2-1 midway through the the 3rd period. But from that point on, the game was anything but uneventful. Captain
Scott Simmonds, playing in what was his final game of the regular season as he now gets set toÂ
head overseas to represent Canada, tied the game at 2-2 on a beautiful re-direct for his 3rd goal of the season. Less than three minutes later, the Gryphons would take a 3-2 lead when
Andres Kopstals went five-hole on Warriors goalie Mike Morrison. For Kopstals, it was just his 2nd goal of the season, with both goals having come in the last three games. That lead would not last long however, as Waterloo's Nick Halagian tied the game at 3-3 with four and a half minutes remaining. When the dust cleared on the wild, four-goal 3rd period, the Gryphs and Warriors were off to overtime.
A high-sticking call on Guelph's
Max McCutcheon gave the Warriors a 4-on-3 power play advantage in the first OT period. Some outstanding work by the Gryphs penalty kill unit combined with several high-quality saves from goalie Keith Hamilton, meant that a second overtime period would be required. Just over a minute into the second extra frame, Gryphs defenceman
Mac Nichol was called for goalie interference, meaning the Warriors would once again get a crack at ending the game on the power play. This time, they would find a way to solve Hamilton, as Mike Moffat's perfectly placed wrist shot from the high slot went through a crowd and found the back of the net to seal the win for U of W.
Hamilton was the hard luck loser, as he turned away 50 of the 54 shots sent his way on the night. The Gryphons were outshot 54-28 on the evening and took a total of seven penalties compared to just three for the Warriors.
Things do not get any easier from here for the Gryphs, who will next be in action on Friday, January 27 when they play host the No. 4-ranked team in the country in McGill. The Redmen are currently sitting in top spot in the OUA's East Division with a record of 17-4-2.
