TORONTO, ON – Saturday afternoon at York University, the Gryphons women's hockey team extended their win streak to seven games with a 3-0 shutout of the York Lions.
Sophie Contant's second period tally was the lone goal of the game until late in the third period when
Brittany St. James scored a pair of empty netters to secure the three points. Gryphons second year goalie
Valerie Lamenta made 14 saves for her seventh shutout of the season as the Gryphons improved to 17-2-1. With the loss, York falls to 7-9-3.
After a scoreless opening period, the Gryphons would open the scoring 6:14 into the second period as a pretty feed from
Karli Shell from behind the net set up Sophie Contant in front for her fourth goal of the season to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore sensation Valerie Lamenta continued her fine form in net and needed to make just 14 saves to record her second consecutive shutout. Lamenta leads the country in both Goals Against Average (0.93) and save percentage (.958). She also boasts a record of 14-2-0 on the season.
Despite a somewhat sluggish start to the game, the Gryphons were able to generate some great scoring chances in the opening period of play. After York was penalized for roughing, the Gryphons went to work on the man advantage, but were kept off the score sheet thanks to several great stops by Lions goalie Megan Lee.
Once Contant was able to open the scoring in the second period, the game nwould open up for the Gryphons who, from that point on, were able to control the game in the neutral zone and keeping play mainly in the Lions' end of the ice. Late in regulation, the Lions would pull their goalie for an extra skater but the gamble would not pay off as Brittany St. James twice took advantage of an empty net.
The Gryphons now return home and will get set to host the Windsor Lancers on Sunday, February 7 at 2pm. The game marks the team's 3rd annual
'Fight For Kevin' game and can be seen live on OUA.tv.
